Pakistan and Syria in Final Showdown

In-form Pakistan are all geared for today’s final showdown with Syria

in the Junior Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Pre-Qualifying tournament

after the latter upstaged top seeds Kazakhstan in the semi-finals yesterday.

Muhammad Zaid Mujahid got Pakistan on the winning track against fifth seeds Vietnam with his 6-1, 6-3 demolition of Tu Minh Tri in the first singles.

Mudassar Murtaza followed up with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Nguyen Dac Tan in the second singles while the doubles match was not played.

As the top two finishers in this tournament, the finalists have qualified for the Junior Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Pre-Qualifying that will also be hosted by SLTA from Apr 27 to May 4.

In the other semi-final, it was Adi Kaliakperov who sparked Kazakhstan’s hopes of making the final after he overcame Mohamad Hazem Naw in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the first singles.

However, Syria had other ideas when Kareem Al Allaf laboured for a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Pavel Petrov in the second singles to level the score 1-1.

In the deciding doubles, Kareem Al Allaf and Mohamad Hazem Naw prevailed 7-5, 6-3 over Grigory Lomakin-Adi Kaliakperov.

Vietnam and Kazakhstan will now play for third/fourth placings in today’s play-off match.

Meanwhile, in the contest for 5th to 8th positions, Iran emerged 2-1 winners over third seeds Turkmenistan while Lebanon edged Saudi Arabia in the other match.
